There was a composer of tunes in the 19th Century called Carl Volti
(real name Archibald Mulligan) who contributed a number of tunes to the
popular Kerr's Merry Melodies series. He seemed to be a prominent
fiddler, but I only have his word for that. He started out on the
whistle, and indeed started a whistle band with his friends. That must
have been during the 1850s or early 1860s. See
