I wouldn't have thought you'd play the variations for dancing, but as a
show tune, or a show-off tune. Skinner might have played it on the
concert stage, rather as Aly Bain did in a fiddle stand-off (with
American fiddler Mark O'Connor, if I remember correctly). Nobody would
dance to these sort of fireworks.
