I've been having a great time studying three books full of Scottish tunes played by traditional fiddlers around the world. Kate Dunlay's and David Greenberg's wonderful "Traditional Celtic Violin Music of Cape Breton" is self-explanatory; Ken Perlman's "Fiddle Music of Prince Edward Island" deals with an area on the border of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick which, like Cape Breton, has a strong Scottish influence on its culture. Finally, Allen Feldman's "The Northern Fiddler" deals mainly with Donegal in the north of Ireland which, although not sharing the Scottish settlements of the Canadian regions, has an extraordinary bias towards Scottish music. It has been a great pleasure seeing which tunes are still being played, and which tunes have evolved almost beyond recognition.
Does anyone know of other, similar collections or studies? I'd love to know what else is available, what other studies have been done. -- Nigel Gatherer, Crieff, Scotland [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/gatherer/ Posted to Scots-L - The Traditional Scottish Music & Culture List - To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
