<<Tune sources. For example, if you were just beginning and had no library, what would be the first book you should buy.>> That's still tough, Rita. Is the individual looking at this list a harper or a fiddler? (Since you posted your request on the Scots list as well as the harplist, I'm going to assume this is not a list of books specifically for harpers.) And even if we were going to say, "let's just make it a harper's list" are you wire, bray or gut? Nylon? What's your interest? New Scottish, old music, classic ports? Session tunes? Where will you be playing? With whom? Solo? Depending on the answers to these questions, I would recommend different tune sources. It's just not as simple as which book should you buy first? I'd have to say it depends on the individual's interests. I know this is going to make your wee project into a huge project, but why not do an annotated bibliography? Then, the student musician can decide based on the descriptions of each book what he or she is most interested in getting and best fits his or her specific needs. Maybe what you should do, rather than tell those who have taken time to send you lists that our priorities have sunk to 99, that instead we need to send them again with a brief description of each so you don't have to do all that work. Or, type up descriptions (I figure 20 to 50 words for each book is enough) and let us help you check them for accuracy. Now, THAT would be a marvelous resource! A mere list of books is not very helpful, really. Especially if the "prioritization" is subjective, as it would have to be if we here just listed them in OUR favorite order. An annotated list would be objective and much more useful. What do you think? I'm willing to write descriptions of the books I sent to you. --Cynthia Cathcart http://www.cynthiacathcart.net/ Posted to Scots-L - The Traditional Scottish Music & Culture List - To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
