I believe it's more accurate to say that Scottish music would be dull if everyone played the same /anything/.
That's why piping competitions are so dull. Not only do they play the same tunes, but they play them Exactly The Same Way Every Time.
Tradition grows, but it never forgets its roots. No matter what paths our traditional music takes in the future, or in this or that country, it will always and everywhere have a common history. Once we forget or deny our history we lose the tradition.
