I agree. Brilliant musician can become brilliant teacher with training, I believe. I *learned* how to teach, taking pedagogy classes in school, currently attending workshops once a month (with the National Music Teacher's Association) and a fair helping of experience. Keeping the skills fresh is important. Indeed it is a separate skill, and one that can be learned with an investment of time.It just means that they haven't spent time developing that skill. It's definately a separate skill
I have witnessed some very elementary teaching mistakes in music workshops and lessons I have taken. These folks would catch and easily correct these mistakes from taking just one pedagogy course. What we REALLY need are more brilliant musicians who are also brilliant teachers, like Toby's friend Stan.
