Could someone please define a "portal" for me? I'm far from a newbie but
this term seems to have sneaked up on me

I could be very very very wrong, and this is probably a really bad
description but....
A portal is a thing that grabs parts of other sites and sticks them all
together on one website, for example grabbing news headlines from slashdot,
new software releases from freshmeat etc and putting them all on one page.
www.linux.org.uk gives a good example of this.
