I Would second the use of Squid - it works really well. 

If saving bandwith is also of interest, take a peek at junkbuster
(http://www.junkbuster.com/) which is an advert-filtering proxy.

I use it here together with squid so that everything's cached.

It allows me to have 2 possible "proxies" 

        proxy:8000 - squid only > net - Whole web pages
        proxy:8080 - junkbuster > squid > net = advert free pages


This can either be configred by logon scripts (Kix32), changing
atoproxyconfig files, or by manually setting up the proxy setings in a
browser.


Oh, and squid copes with ftp:// via a web browser too...
