See if you can push the FB up to 1024x768. At that resolution, with a
decent sized font, the console looks wonderful.

My guess is that the Linux VB code didn't initalise the matrox properly.
It probably assumed the card was in a certain state (e.g. current writing
colour?). Have you tried hard resetting the machine, or switching it off
and back on again? If that helps, then I suspect that the kernel is at
fault. AFAICR 2.4.2 or 2.4.3 had some fixes for VB and matrox cards ...

Yep.
I'm working on getting the FreeBIOS thing working, so my machine boots up
with a penguin right from the start :^D
