Hmmm

Controlling Tape Drives...first off try mt -f /dev/tape status

mt is the Magnetic Tape controller

Next you'll be wanting something to actually backup your stuff...there's
a pile of userspace tools...

Taper - Nice for interactive backups
Amanda - Great for unattended backups (what we use)
KDat - KDE Tape Backup tool (not used, so can't say any more)

And, as Mike Insch pointed out...good ol' tar.

To use tar try this: tar -zcvf /dev/tape /home/* /etc/* /usr/local/* for
example.
