Erm, there shouldn't be any sort of icons when you start Enlightenment
presuming that you've started it on it's own.  Could be a pager of course.  You
get e menus up by simply clicking anywhere on the "desktop"; left click will
bring up the user menus, middle click user menus plus some extras and right
click is the maintenance options.
