One of the probs I dealt with at the Installday was
setting up a cd-writer. I had problems with my own
until recently, so here's my configuration for
an ATAPI writer using SCSI emulation.

Kernel configuration - selected as modules:

SCSI emulation support
SCSI support
SCSI CD-ROM support
SCSI generic support

And to use kmod, in /etc/modules.conf

alias scd0 sr_mod
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
pre-install sg modprobe -k ide-scsi
pre-install sr_mod modprobe -k scsi_mod
pre-install scsi-mod modprobe -k ide-scsi

/dev/cdrom points to /dev/scd0
