O'Reilly published the entire 'Learning Debian GNU/Linux' on their website:

If you're using bog standard Debian, then you will have to set up X
manually. I think it may set up the printer for you, but I am unsure at the
moment.
Apt is remarkably good, IMHO. It sets up a cache of available programs, on
CD, an FTP, which you can search with apt-cache search <prog_name> and then
install with apt-get install <progname>. All dependancies will be
installed, and it will also configure it all for you. If you've got web
access, then I've heard it can be fantastic.
