I'll give that a go later, thanks I was still trying to set up the dns but i
wasn't quite sure. I'll get round to more specific questions some other time
if I can't figure it out (I'm still newish to linux).

It's a DNS problem. Sendmail needs to know about DNS. at least, it needs to
know about the box it's running on.

I suggest that in /etc/hosts on the box you make sure you have a fully
qualified domain name for the host.

ie
192.168.1.1     thisbox.domain.co.uk    thisbox

Other than that, it's time for the magic chicken bones over your zone files
