This may be of some interest to members of SLUG:-

"Central Scotland Police use Linux and other Open Source software
extensively throughout their systems. A number of in-house software
developments are conducted to meet the specific needs of the Police
Service and a vacancy has arisen for an Analyst Programmer, based at
Police Headquarters in Stirling.

The successful candidate will be involved in the development of
applications using Java and hence must possess demonstrable Java skills,

in addition to Linux skills. Skill in PHP, Perl, Apache, C, C++ and
also
Linux systems administration (Samba, Sendmail, PostgreSQL) will add
considerably to a candidates suitability.

Considerable work is presently planned which will involve the successful

candidate in developing distributed database applications using CORBA,
Oracle and IBM DB2. Design skills and experience in the use of UML and
Rational Rose would be advantageous.

There is a strong emphasis on capability and hence, whilst desirable, a
computing discipline degree qualification is not considered essential
where skills and practical experience are shown to an equivalent
standard. The successful applicant may be required to participate in
formally accredited courses to degree level as part of their career
development programme. These may involve significant out-of-hours
study,
though accommodation will be made as appropriate.

Salary is on scale AP-IV (18,006 - 19,980) during initial 6 month
probation, thereafter on scale AP-V (20,610 - 22,491). Initial
placement is on the lower level unless the successful candidate
transfers
from an eligible Public Sector employer, when normal rules will apply.
A
pay award is pending.

An initial, informal, discussion of the post requirements may be
obtained
by telephoning Central Scotland Police on 01786 456000 and asking to
speak to the IT Manager."
