Hi Stuart,

Things to check...

Is the module loaded? (lsmod)
Does it report anything out of the ordinary? (Dmesg, tail
                                        /var/log/messages)
Is kppp using the correct port? or is the symbolic link to /dev/modem
correct.
For example if /dev/modem points to /dev/ttyS1 and your real modem is on
/dev/ttyS0  then it will also report that error.
You have  permission to open the device, make sure it is readable to the
user running kppp.
