Well thats called a quick response!!

For some reason my rc.local was not executable - was yesterday but there we 
are.  I did not realise thaqt there was a  S99local  as well so I have 
learned a bit more.

The machine is rebooting now with corrected permissions ....  And that has 
worked - thank you Pual.

Darren, thanks for the reply.  Yes I do use up-2-date but tend to compile all 
my services and apps from source rather than just letting RPM do all the 
work.  I am just learning so I think this is the best approach.  I do use it 
to update the libraries and stuff like that but only very occassionally when 
a security issue threatens my wee setup!!
