try http://www.dslreports.com/stest or one of another myriad of
bandwidth/speed test sites out there, although realistically if you're not
getting around 55-60KBytes/sec downstream and about 12-15KBytes/sec upstream
on blueyonder when downloading from UK mainland sites, there's something
amiss ...

a nice check without messing with speed tests is just wget the latest linux
kernel from somewhere nice and fast like mirror.ac.uk or plig.org ...
