Well if you want a little-effort/big-log solution :-) you could always have a cron line something like: */5 * * * * top -n 1 -b |head -15 >> /home/mcr/top.dump 2>> /home/mcr/top.dump.err but adjust the */5 if you want it to log at some interval other than every 5 minutes and adjust the head -15 if you want some other number of lines logged.
