Mine goes a little like this:

auto lo eth0
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp
        address 192.168.1.1
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        network 192.168.0.0
        broadcast 192.168.1.255
        gateway 192.168.1.1

This is of course for a DHCP client, where 192.168.1.1
is my smoothwall router/firewall.

The interfaces man page has more info.
