Your now running LPRng which is quite different from the old BSD printing system. One of the odder features is that it (should) regenerate printcap at boot.

I've had more success with ljet2p than ljet4 (more recent versions of Ghostscript have 2 lj4 drivers - one with PJL, and one without - might be worth swapping what you're running). I have had an HP1100 working with the ljet2p ghostscript driver on RH5.2. You might have to manually edit the printer filter file to get the engine to run at a higher resolution (300x300 by default).
