Probably worth pointing out you can do the (at least initial) compilation inside another distro (ie inside a chroot-ed environment). So you can surf whilst gentoo does its stuff. Not tried it myself, but same mate who tried RH8.0 got so hacked off by it that he installed Gentoo the same night. He says its much better, provided you're the kind of person that likes mucking about with source. It might be a bit daunting if you're not.
