You've probably gathered this by now, but..

As someone rightly pointed out it needs to support PPP over ATM (PPPoA) if
it's for ADSL in the UK. The only thing that varies between here and other
countries are the ATM settings (VPI & VCI, I think), which are usually set
by software.

But watch out, some modems and other nice things (e.g. cheap combined
router, firewall, 802.11 APs) only support PPP over Ethernet. Which is
what most of the USA use for ADSL. PPPoE only ever seems to be used here
by Cable Broadband providers.

Dunno why BT went for PPPoA when PPPoE is more common and simpler. Oh,
wait on, it's more esoteric..
