Yup, even when I had my Ximian / Sawfish / gnome desktop I had got rid of nautilus - used gmc instead.

Nautilus 2 is very much lighter and faster than 1 was, if you haen't
tried it out recently it's worth a second look.

Sorry - still not convinced. After I got the network all configured gnome was a little less flaky (why?) and I can now get the gnome-panel started under mwm - which is usable. I'm going to try and get something nicer running over the weekend.
