Just to check the obvious things since you don't say you did them...

did you do 'make modules' and 'make modules_install'?
and reboot into the new kernel?

However, if you build a kernel and have errors, it's kinda safe to
assume that it has failed.  It's really a good idea to read the errors.
Or at least tell us what they are.
