As an analogy, it reminds me of a time when I had to look after a class of school kids... They were all bored out their minds, and generally having a boring time. I suggested that we play a game on the whiteboard or something, and was met with a stony wall of apathy. I couldn't come up with any decent suggestions, as I didn't know what the kids wanted, yet when they were asked what they wanted, they didn't seem to give a toss and would rather remain bored and lifeless.
