It might your DMA settings, which you can tweak with the hdparm tool. /sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/xxxX will enable DMA for a device, and just hdparm /dev/ xxxx on it's own will show the current state of the device. My Celeron 1.2Ghz, 128Mb laptop played back DVDs fine with mplayer, so I doubt it's a memory/horsepower issue.
