May I suggest you using StatsCollector 
<http://doc.scrapy.org/en/latest/topics/api.html#scrapy.statscol.StatsCollector.inc_value>,
 
it is accessible on spider.crawler.stats and doing a PR on Scrapy would be 
nice too.
