Scratchbox 2.0 is now officially released. Git repo has the tag, tarballs are available. Go get them while they are hot!
Scratchbox 2 is a cross-compilation tool targeting ARM, PPC, MIPS, X86 and SH architectures. Scratchbox 2 works on i386 and x86_64 host machines, supporting a mix of 32bit and 64bit binaries. We consider now to be a good time to release Scratchbox 2 as we think it is complete enough and works correctly enough to be used in a production environment. Scratchbox 2 is used to build Software Development Kits (SDKs), Maemo SDK+ is an example. Scratchbox 2 is not a direct replacement of Scratchbox 1, it can be used to fullfil the same function, but Scratchbox 2 provides a much more flexible and easier to maintain implementation. As an example, a minimal Scratchbox 2 installation takes less than a megabyte (minimal Scratchbox 1 is around 100 megabytes), does not require super user rights, and out of the box supports multiple simultaneous sessions for different target configurations. providing quite competent cross-compilation support. A more complete build environment requires a controlled set of build tools, which Scratchbox 2 supports independently of the host machine's distribution by letting the user specify a directory from which all binaries are used from. 2.0.x series will continue to get bugfixes, but no performance improvements or new features. New features, architectural changes and performance improvements will take place in the master development branch, whereas 2.0.x is maintained in 2.0-maintenance branch. Even radical re-design is encouraged, and in fact we already have a number of big changes and cleanups lined up. Big thanks to everybody who contributed code, tested, provided ideas or otherwise helped Scratchbox 2 dream come true! The development was seriously kicked off in the Emdebian Extremadura workshop in April 2006. It's been a little longer than expected process, but all good things come to those who wait long enough :) More information at: http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/sbox2 The Scratchbox 2 Core Developers _______________________________________________ Scratchbox-users mailing list Scratchbox-users@lists.scratchbox.org http://lists.scratchbox.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/scratchbox-users
