Follow-up Comment #16, bug #66614 (group screen):

I had a similar problem with eucJP encoding.
  screen 4.1.0 (CentOS 7): OK
  screen 4.9.1 (Fedora 40): OK
  screen 5.0.1 (Fedora 42): NG
After reading this discussion, I solved it by applying the same one-line fix.
When this line was removed on February 22 2019 (according to git log), I think
the scope of the impact was not fully assessed.
This line is necessary at least for GBK and eucJP, but if there are several
encodings where this line is problematic, a conditional check may be needed.
