Do you have anything in your ~/.screenrc relating to a hardstatus?
Try something like this:
hardstatus alwayslastline "%{bw}[ %?%-Lw%?%{wb} %n*%f %t %{bw}%?%+Lw%?
]%=%{bw}[ %C %A ] [ %l ]"
This provides more than 'numbers' however. Perhaps it's something you might be
interested in.
