Probably typical broken TERMCAP garbage. I use tcsh and my .tcshrc
file, I have this line to wipe out the TERMCAP and then everything
behaves properly for me.
if ($term == "screen") then
unsetenv TERMCAP
endif
Try duplicating that in bash and it will probably fix the issue.
