It seems this is caused by the MPD plugin for NowPlaying (at least the problem posted by the OP, don't know about Allan Lopes' problem). To fix it, just remove the /usr/lib/python2.6/dist- packages/screenlets/plugins/mpdclient2.py and .pyc files (or just rename them to something starting with .). It works just fine for me if I do that (I'm using Rhythmbox).
