Reading from http://www.linuxhowtos.org/System/procstat.htm
The very first "cpu" line aggregates the numbers in all of the other
"cpuN" lines.
It appears that the amounts are added by the system and not the
Screenlets framework. I think that your idea of calculating the average
is OK for the first cpu line. I'm commiting the changes (rev 572) and
we'll see if it's universally fine.
