Good old top command can be a good indicator (esp if collected over time and plotted using GnuPlot) but in UNIX in general, there is dearth of sophisticated performance analysis tools. You may want to try gprof and/or valgrind (with gnogrind as GUI frontend) Others on this list may suggest other options.
