I've upgraded now Ubuntu 12.10 in VM and there is no problems at all. When I said try to run it with root permissions, I thought to try to run in from terminal with command: sudo python /usr/share/screenlets/screenlets-pack-basic/Slideshow/SlideshowScreenlet.py Please try command above and report here if that works.
