Peter, I would favor the Athlon or Pentium 3 for serious gaming -- but, like John says, performance depends just as much on other factors, like the amount of memory you install. Also, I can't stress enough the importance of a cutting-edge video card for a machine that's devoted primarily to games! I'd invest in at least a TNT2 or Voodoo 3 card -- they're still more than capable with today's games -- but if you're looking for a card that will take you the long haul and you can afford it, the GeForce 2 is superb. By the way, I see that nvidia has bought the graphics division of 3dfx... "curiouser and curiouser," as Alice would say. Keep us posted!
