The Latest from The Screwdriver List!

Wow! A great response from the rapidly-growing membership of The
Screwdriver List on this one, and everyone that responded had at least one
correct possible solution to our troubleshooting problem... the first to
respond, however was Fred Davey, and he's our List Trivia Guru for the week!

In order of possibility (in my opinion), here they are:

1. A CD-RW was used instead of a CD-R. Luckily, most of today's recording
software will at least try to stop you from doing this.

2. You actually burned a DATA CD instead of an audio CD, without converting
those MP3 or WAV files to RedBook format. Again, most programs will do this
for you automatically, *if* they know that you're writing an audio CD.

3. You didn't finalize (or "close") the disc. You can play this incomplete
audio CD on your CD-R/CD-RW drive, but until you close it you can't use it
in a standard audio CD player.

4. Your player simply isn't compatible with CD-R discs, or has trouble
reading a specific dye/reflective layer combination. (This is a problem
with older car CD and DVD/CD players.)

5. You used the wrong format, of which there are a handful... for example,
Apple Macintosh format.

(By the way, if any or all of that sounded like Greek and you're having
problems with your CD recorder, I recommend my book HEWLETT PACKARD OFFICIAL
RECORDABLE CD HANDBOOK -- you should find it in your local bookstore, or you
can always order from amazon.com. It covers all these solutions in depth...
end of shameless plug!)

Thanks are due to all that responded for a great troubleshooting session!
