I wonder that this might actually be the simpliest way right now. It's the 
simpliest I can think of but it's really cumbersome, isn't it?

Is there some easier method?

I believe that extending the method to select objects below the top most to 
also work when the top most "object" is a guide would be much more intuitive 
and quick.
