[Scribus] Inserting special characters

Using the KDE 3 utility kcharselect, I pasted special characters
like an em dash, typographical quotes and the euro sign into
scribus.  These appear on the on-screen layout but aren't printed
or saved.  I'm using scribus 0.9.8.  Is this a known issue?  Is
there any way of printing and saving these characters in a
scribus layout?
