Although I do not have the cvs build referred to in the message, I have had some experience with this problem; so, allow me to weigh in. I have worked with editors and sent Quark files to the image setter (in Michigan!). When the print returns the author finds the page is not exactly as the copy submission was. It flows differently. And they say "oh, you used ttf Times not ps TimsRmn." or "you did not really have bold italics in Collect for Output...." The differences are very slight but authors are disconcerted and sometimes the absolutely exact placing is critical (to them at least). No matter how "easy" it is to pick fonts (I do call for that) one must know what is really available and be restrained from doing what it not going to take effect.
