I looked through the archives, and found this same problem back in October and November 2003 - it was suggested by Paul and Franz that it may be due to a corrupt font. It went away with a new cvs version for the person who had the problem, so it seems that some Scribus versions are less tolerant than others.
You might try a cvs version and see if that takes care of the problem. Greg
