I recall I DID have problems with libgs.so. I solved it and since SuSE comes with a ton of development packages I suppose that was it and I stumbled into the solution (since I now use 8.53 as it says. in About:Scribus. I have yet to get to SuSE 10. Advice? Pitfalls? OT?
