I've checked this out with some image/text files I have (with 1.3.4cvs), 
checking the result with ImageMagick, and while IM tells me correct info 
(118 pixels-per-cm ? 300 pixels-per-inch) there are differences in the 
result which relate to the original image resolution (pre-Scribus). Text 
looks fine.

There can be a computer-point-of-view DPI that is different from the 
visual resolution -- maybe this is what you are dealing with.
