I noticed that you did realise that an Acrobat license is not necessary as you mentioned the import feature in a later post. However, even without that I have been able to "join" multiple pdfs. The only point to notice was that I'm using a Linux box where you can find atleast a few methods to do most of the things. Also, the web page http://ansuz.sooke.bc.ca/software/pdf-append.php is a good read if you are interested.
