I use MiKTeX and find it quite good. It's easy to keep updated, and it's easy to add packages. I've read of a ProTeX that's based on MiKTeX and may have some advantages, but I've never used it. > I'd recommend either Vim (http://www.vim.org/) or > Xemacs (http://www.xemacs.org/index.html) for a text > editor. They are both open source and cross platform. In particular, check out AUCTeX, which runs under Emacs (and, presumably, XEmacs). It's makes writing LaTeX markup much easier. I've assembled a few links at http://facilitatedsystems.com/links.html#writing; I'll have to add Scribus when I get a moment.
