Ow I did not notice the that one image will print correctly from the gimp and a other image will not print correctly from the gimp. Then it is probably not a printer problem.
Did you test printing from scribus to postscript and from postscript to your printer. Also I now that transparencies in images can give strange effect to be sure your image is correct make it a jpg or make sure the png has no alpha layer.
