What's about PDF/X-3, which could be fine for printing, also if the embedded images are all in icc profiled RGB, as suggested by the eci.org [1] ? Let the printshops RIP doing the separation. Ok, that's often rejected by printshops in the USA, but it gets very common in northern Europe, though. Also, there is active (somewhat slow and intransparent) developement in GEGL [2] the new rendering engine for GIMP 2.6 - 3.0. And Sven Neumann stated, that he and the devels will do some effort to improve the colormanagement capabilities of theGIMP 2.4 and the CMYK capabilities with implementation of Alistair M. Robinson's CMYK seperate Plugin into the tiff-output-plugin. "Color management is supposed to be improved for the 2.4 release and I also plan to include the functionality provided by the Separate plug-in in the standard TIFF plug-in. That will give you the possibility to create CMYK files but you still won't be able to edit images in CMYK mode." Sven Neumann [3] Also there is a bunch of software patents that hinders the developement [4] regards Gerhard Gau?ling [1] http://www.eci.org/eci/en/032_pdfx3.php http://www.eci.org/eci/downloads/ECI-en/pdfx/PDFX_FAQ_English_NOV05.pdf 14.
