But it's not that hard to make the blackboard's shadow degrading to transparent background in a decent image editor (e.g. Gimp, PaintShopPro etc). You just have to save the resulting image as a GIF, which supports transparencies. Scribus handles such transparencies well, though you may run into troubles with transparencies in some versions of PDF output from Scribus.
