Thank you for that useful reply. I've copied it to my resource file for future use, should anybody ask me to help prepare a book. On the one book I've done in Quark, I did use master page formatting, setting up duplicates for each chapter file in order to retain the unique page style throughout. I numbered the pages manually, each chapter as I worked on it, and I kept a draft table of contents form as I went along, and the book had no index. I'm sure this was "doing it the hard way" but I learn as I do things.
